by Lorna Collins (Author), Robert L. Schwenck (Illustrator)
Mission San Juan Capistrano has long been called "The Jewel of the Missions." This book captures the history of the mission from its founding in 1776 by Father (now Saint) Junipero Serra to the present day. Between the pages, you will learn about many features of the mission and discover why it continues to be a local treasure and a favorite of tourists. Lorna Collins is a local author who has co-written a novel about Mission San Juan Capistrano called "The Memory Keeper." She and her husband, Larry K. Collins, are currently working on the sequel to the novel to be titled, "Becoming the Jewel." Robert L. Schwenck is an award-winning local artist, who has been painting the mission and the town of San Juan Capistrano for many years. His love of the city and its historic buildings is evident in his work.

The paintings in this book emerged from my murky unconscious. The mixture of images—angelic, human, animal, architectural or botanical—is intuitive. They were not painted in any logical storytelling sequence. They contain some consistent references like the memorial arch at the Presbyterian Church in San Juan Capistrano dedicated to our deceased daughter, Erin. The church and gallery facades are actual places where experiences important in my life have been a blessing. All these images are used poetically, without the demands of historical logic. I hope these paintings and the words accompanying them will help others see their lives, their struggles, their successes, their failures, their faith, their doubts, and their pain and frustrations from a more balanced and hopeful place. This edition contains a Foreword by Allen D. Koehn, D.Min.; L.M.F.T.; Certified Jungian Analyst; Professor Emeritus Pacifica Graduate Institute.

This book combines biblical symbolism with Jungian psychological explanations of their meanings. A theory or an idea is of no use unless it is able to attach itself to some experiential hook in our living. Consequently, this book attempts to connect some of the major themes and images of depth psychology and the New Testament to experiences in contemporary life. "Digging Deep" has value both for the clergy and for the layman trying to understand the symbolic meaning in the scriptures.
